Experience Bruges Like a Local: Beyond the Tourist Crowds

Bruges is the crown jewel of West Flanders and one of Europe’s most visited historic cities. Often called the “Venice of the North,” it attracts millions of tourists every year thanks to its medieval canals, cobblestone streets, and remarkably preserved architecture.

But with popularity comes crowds — especially around the city’s main squares, canals, and landmark museums. For those who want to experience the city differently, there are more authentic ways to discover its hidden side.

Discover Bruges on two wheels

One of the most immersive ways to explore the city is through a guided Retro Bike Tour, led by a local guide who takes you beyond the usual postcard spots. Instead of following the typical tourist routes, you cycle through quiet streets, hidden courtyards, and lesser-known corners of the historic center.

Along the way, the guide shares stories that bring Bruges’ layered history to life — from its medieval golden age to its modern cultural revival.

A taste of local secrets

The experience typically ends in a hidden garden setting, away from the busy city center, where participants enjoy a small tasting of local products. It’s a relaxed moment that contrasts sharply with the busy tourist hotspots just a few streets away.

Before you leave, you also receive insider tips — almost like a local “doggy bag” of recommendations — helping you continue exploring Bruges beyond the obvious highlights.

A different way to see a famous city

While Bruges is undeniably one of Europe’s most visited cities, experiences like these offer a more personal perspective. Instead of simply seeing the city, you get a feel for its rhythm, its quieter corners, and the everyday life that often gets lost in the crowds.

In Bilbao, colorful urban murals rise beside contemporary buildings while the Guggenheim reflects the city’s creative transformation along the river. Beyond the museums and architecture, the Basque atmosphere continues through vineyard landscapes, sculptural wineries and one of Europe’s most celebrated food cultures.

Pintxos bars overflow late into the evening, local markets shape daily life and even the countryside feels artistic — from avant-garde wine estates hidden between the hills to unexpected public art scattered throughout the region.

The Basque Country moves effortlessly between modern creativity and deep-rooted traditions.

Ask the map for architecture spots, vineyard routes, hidden art locations and local food experiences across the Basque Country.

Barcelona reveals a different atmosphere once the city is seen from the Mediterranean.

Departing from Marina Vela beside Barceloneta and the W Barcelona, this catamaran experience slowly leaves the busy coastline behind and opens towards panoramic views of the city skyline, golden evening light and the calm rhythm of the sea.

On board, music, local tapas and a drink set the tone for a slower Mediterranean escape while the catamaran moves along the coast. Lounge across the front nets, feel the sea breeze drifting through the boat and watch Barcelona slowly transform from the water.

During daytime cruises, the boat stops for a swim in clear Mediterranean waters, while sunset sailings reveal one of the most cinematic views of the city as the sun disappears behind the skyline.

A quieter way to experience Barcelona — somewhere between sea, light and slow coastal living.

Reserve your catamaran experience and discover Barcelona from the Mediterranean.

Seville in one stop: Metropol Parasol (Las Setas).

Start your day early at Las Setas. Walk underneath the structure when it’s still quiet, then take the elevator up for a panoramic view over the city. The morning light is softer and the walkways are less crowded.

From there, head towards the historic centre. Visit the Cathedral and climb La Giralda for another perspective over Seville. Take a slow lunch in Santa Cruz, where small streets are filled with local tapas spots.

In the afternoon, walk along the river towards Triana. It’s a bit more local and less crowded, perfect for a relaxed coffee or a short break.

Return to Las Setas at sunset. The structure lights up and the city changes atmosphere completely. It’s the best moment to end your day.

Stay in the historic centre so everything is within walking distance.

In cities like Belgrade evenings often revolve around food and live music.

Book a local restaurant instead of a tourist spot. Musicians will usually move between tables while you eat. This is part of the culture so it is normal to tip them.

Try dishes like ćevapi grilled meats or stuffed peppers and pair it with local wine or rakija.

Stay in a hotel in the city center so you can walk everywhere and avoid taxis at night. Areas like Dorćol or Stari Grad are the most practical.

This is the kind of trip where you keep your schedule light and focus on the experience.

Imperial Riding School, Autograph Collection is located just outside the very centre of Vienna, offering a quieter alternative to staying directly on the Ringstrasse.

Rooms are modern and comfortable, while the common areas focus more on design and atmosphere. There’s also a garden courtyard and wellness facilities, which can be a plus if you want some downtime after exploring the city.

St. Stephen’s Square, also called “Pjaca”, is the largest piazza in Dalmatia, spanning an area of 4500 m².

Once, a deep bay cut into this area and the sea reached to the point where the cathedral stands today.

Over time, two fortified cities developed nearby – Grode in the north and Burga in the south. During the following centuries, the bay was gradually filled up until the square reached its present extent. The Pjaca with the Cathedral on the eastern side and Madrač, the small fishing port, on the western side already existed in the 15th century.

At first, it was even wider than today and surrounded by gardens but due to lack of space in the inner city, houses were also built on the north side of the square outside the city walls.

The community well in the middle of the Pjaca was built in 1520 and repaired in 1780 and 1830. The square was completely paved in 1780.
